Proclamation signed regarding rare disease

Bathurst Mayor Stephen Brunet has signed a proclamation declaring the week of July 21 to 27 as Plelan-McDermid Syndrome Week in regognition of all families affected by this disorder and in honor of the 22q13 Deletion Foundation Support Group. Plelan-McDermid Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder where the 13th chromosome is missing at birth. There are only 300 cases known worldwide. Shown with the mayor is Carol Jakatis and her nephew Justin Roy of Bathurst. Carol is the aunt of three-year-old Ashlee Farrell, who has the disease. Ashlee and her family are originally from Bathurst but had to move to Ontario for treatment.
