TODAY

--The Heart and Stroke Foundation's Big Bike Ride continues today. At 9 a.m., Public Health is on board. At 1 p.m., it's the staff from Sobeys. At 6 p.m., it's the staff from Chaleur Regional Hospital and at 6:30 p.m., it's Village of Belledune All rides will be starting from Sobeys on St. Peter Avenue.

WEDNESDAY

--The Bathurst Christian Women's Club is hosting a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Danny's Inn and Conference Centre in Beresford. Marc McGraw of McGraw Shoes and Orthotics will present valuable tips on purchasing footwear. Guest speaker Shirley Moore, provincial coordinator for the P.E.I. Association of Community Schools, will give a talk entitled "How All Things Work Together For Good." Tickets are $13 and reservations and cancellations for the luncheon are necessary. --The Bathurst Heritage Museum's Movies Under The Stars season is under way. Tonight's film, shown against the side of the Heritage Museum at 360 Douglas Ave., is the classic Julie Andrews musical The Sound of Music. Show time is dusk, weather permitting. Please bring your own chair, blankets and bug repellent. Admission is free but donations gratefully accepted. All proceeds go to the Bathurst Heritage Trust Commission.

UPCOMING

-- The Bathurst High School Computer Access Centre is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Sept. 2 and then hours will be from 3:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Also, registration for adult Internet courses will be starting soon. Call 547-2753 to register.

The Access Centre is located in the Bathurst High School library on King Avenue.

--The Province of New Brunswick will conduct a presentation of the New Brunswick Climate Change Action Plan on Sept. 3. This will take place at the Bathurst Sustainable Development Climate Change Action Centre, lcoated at 237 Main St., Suite 1, Bathurst. Presentation times are 6 p.m. (in English) and 7 p.m. (French) Everyone is welcome!

--The Girl Guides of Canada are holding registration Sept. 4 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the basement of Sacred Heart Cathedral (use the back door entrance). The age categories are Sparks, five and six-years old; Brownies, seven and eight; Girl Guides, nine to 11; Pathfinders, 12 to 14; and Rangers, 15 to 17. Adults are also welcome as leaders are needed.

After Sept. 4, girls can still register by coming to Sacred Heart on Thursday evenings during Sparks.

--This year's annual Vogue Optical's SuperWalk for Parkinson's for the region of Northern New Brunswick will be hosted by the Greater Miramichi Parkinson Chapter on Sept. 7, at the Douglastown Community Centre, Miramichi. Regristration is at 1:30 pm. with the walk at 2:30 pm. --The monthly Family and Community Breakfast at St. George's Church Hall, 432 King Ave. returns Sept. 13 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. There's eggs, hash browns, sausage, homemade bread, beans, etc. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under. --The Bathurst Animal Shelter/Gloucester SPCA's annual dog jog will be held at Coronation Park on Sept. 13, rain date Sept. 20. Pledge sheets are available at the shelter at 880 Riordon Ave. in the Bathurst Industrial Park (off Miramichi Avenue) or call 548-8537. Categories for pledge collectors are youth under 12, and adult. Lots of prizes for participants and top pledge collectors.

This is a family event with registration starting at 9:30 a.m., the dog walk around the three bridges at 10 a.m. followed by a barbecue, games and contests for dogs and their owner. You can participate by collecting pledges or paying an entry fee of $10.

--The Anglican Parish of New Bandon will hold thier annual salmon supper on Sept. 13 at Christ Chruch Hall in Clifton. Setting times are 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. All tickets sold in advance at a cost of $14 for adults and $7 for children under 12. OTHER HAPPENINGS

--Now's the time to register your children (ages three to five) for Story Hour at the Smurfit-Stone Public Library. It will be held Fridays at 10:30 a.m., starting Oct. 10 Registrations are limited. For more info, call 548-0706.

--The Great Pabineau Duck Race was held July 5 and the winner was Cynthia Sewell. Organizers wish to thank all who supported this fundraiser.

--Volunteers are being sought from Bathurst to help organize and help out with a Terry Fox Run in September. The Terry Fox Foundation donates 87 cents from every dollar to the National Cancer Institute of Canada, and has raised more than $400 million over the years. --Chaleur Palliative Community Services is seeking volunteers in the Chaleur region to help support individuals and their families coping with a terminal illness. --The Bathurst Art Society invites you to drop in to the Bay Breeze Art Gallery to see the many works of art which includes water colour, acrylic, oil, pottery, unique jewelry, etc. Extended hours of operation are: Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. The gallery is located at 82 Douglas Ave. in the Waterfront Village.

Student art lessons (ages 8 to 12) and drawing lessons (12 and over) are offered. Drop in for more information on these and other weekend classes being offered, or phone 546-6937. The Bathurst Art Society is also exhibiting at the City Hall (until September) in the Bathurst Canada Games Pavilion and at the Auberge de la Vallee.

--The SPCA Bookstore, at 695 St. Peter Ave., is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Book donations, hard and soft cover, are welcome. All proceeds go to the Bathurst Animal Shelter/Gloucester SPCA.

-The Bathurst Volunteer Centre is always in need of food donations in order to serve the needy. Any restaurant, store or individuals who may be left with food items that will go unused, please think of donating to the centre. Call 549-5955.
