Belledune ponders heavy equipment training

Belledune's mayor has made a recommendation for the Village of Belledune to look into heavy equipment operators training for local residents.
"Looking at the fact that there could be some considerable above ground mining happening in Belledune over the next several years, with respect to potential aggregate projects," said Mayor Nick Duivenvoorden. "The call has already gone out for heavy equipment operators, and there are people who would certainly benefit from having that training."
Councillor Jerry Guitard said he is aware of a number of places that offer this type of training and believes promoting the idea would be beneficial to the village. Other councillors were also positive towards the idea.
Added Mayor Duivenvoorden: "I think it would be a wonderful thing for our community if it was determined that we'll either pay for or subsidize the cost of the course on the assumption the people who accept our offer complete it."
Village clerk Brenda Cormier will look at various options.
Playground equipment purchased
Council has purchased a playground swing set for the physically challenged at a cost of $14,000.
The swing set was not in the 2008 budget but village clerk Brenda Cormier said there is financial room to make the purchase noting that reserves from the village capital fund can be dipped into if need be.
The swing set will be placed near the Belledune Recreation Centre park sometime this summer.
Water problem corrected
A coliform problem at the Jacquet River camp ground has been cleared up.
Water to camp sites had higher than accepted levels of coliform so shock treatment with heavy chlorination and flushing was done last week.
"After the shock treatment, it's supposed to be sound," said Mayor Nick Duivenvoorden. "I would imagine that will be constantly monitored to make sure it stays that way."
It was noted that a separate well serving the camp ground office did not have a coliform problem. Coliform is a group of bacteria usually killed by chlorine.
