Blue Day sought to stamp out bullying

An anti-bullying activist from Bathurst is part of an effort to turn Canada blue, figuratively speaking, in the continuing fight against bullying in all forms.
BullyingCanada.Ca, cofounded by Robbie Frenette, is working with many parents in calling upon the federal government to implement a National Anti-Bullying Awareness Day, to be called Blue Day.
Blue Day would be observed each Dec. 17, and students, educators, parents and the general public would be asked to wear blue in support of anti-bullying organizations.
"This is a great initiative to help support the many worthy anti-bullying organizations from across Canada and around the world," said Robbie, who has been a victim of bullying in the past.
A letter has already been sent to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, outlining what Blue Day would consist of. There is also a national petition in circulation and various businesses have agreed to have to have a petition on site, including: Golden Image Center, Dixie Lee, Club Soda Resto Lounge, Atlantic Super Store, Renaissance Jewellers, Brunswick Pontiac Buick LTD and Club Des Amis (both locations).
There are also copies at the Main Street office of Liberal Brian Kenny, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Bathurst.
"Support has been amazing. So many parents, and the general public want to get involved for such a great cause," said Robbie, who graduated last month from Bathurst High School and now plans to study journalism at the New Brunswick Community College in Woodstock.
He said the significance of Dec. 17 is that this is the date BullyingCanada.Ca was launched in 2006.
"Petitions are currently being sent from Coast to Coast with support coming from, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Ontario, and just about everywhere in between," he said.
