MONTREAL - A Montreal man who pleaded guilty to fatally striking a cyclist with his car was sentenced Friday to 10 years in jail.

Dave Ouellette, 26, was charged with dangerous driving causing death, hit and run and vehicle theft.

Ouellette stole a vehicle on Aug. 21, 2006, and was chased by its owner, who had borrowed the car from his girlfriend.

After a high-speed chase, Ouellette struck Murielle Chauvet, a 43-year-old mother of two, who was cycling in the suburb of Ile-Bizard-Ste-Genevieve.

Ouellette pleaded guilty in February.

Serge Descoteaux, Chauvet's husband, said he was very satisfied with the sentence upon leaving the courtroom.

Defence lawyer Marion Burelle said she is "seriously considering" an appeal.
