Alberta government spends $155 million sprucing up universities, colleges

EDMONTON - The Alberta government is spending $155 million to spruce up post-secondary institutions across the province.

Doug Horner, the province's advanced education minister, says the money is essential for the maintenance and renewal of college and university campuses.

Horner also says he hopes the money will reduce the backlog of projects at post-secondary institutions.

The money will be doled out in two chunks over the next two years.

Over $82 million will be spent funding 26 high-priority projects at 12 institutions, and about $72 million will be spent on 21 other projects.

Harry Chase, education critic for the Alberta Liberals, says he wants the province to increase funding to maintain aging public schools.
