Customer unhappy with service regarding exchange
Published Tuesday October 7th, 2008

To the Editor:
Ever have trouble returning or exchanging items? Yes, we all know: 90 days for exchange or refund with receipt only.
Isn't there exceptions to the rule?
I tried to exchange items from my baby shower from pink to blue – not used, tags still present, packages unopened nor damaged. Of course, since they were gifts, no receipt.
Reason for exchange? Try finding out at 32 weeks pregnant they made a mistake and you're having a boy after referring to him as a girl for the past three months.
Although they knew I had no receipt, the floor manager at the customer service desk asked to hear my story. After hearing my story, at which point I was getting emotional, they said there is nothing they could do to help me.
So, why ask for my story then?
I then called their corporate office. They informed me of the same policy but that the store manager does have discretion in these matters and that he or she may help me if I explained the situation.
(The representative I was speaking with over the phone didn't see why they wouldn't.)
I then called the store manager in hopes of reaching a solution to my dilemma. Despite explaining my case, they did not want to help me in any way whatsoever. My husband then asked if they were aware that store managers do have discretion in these matters, according to head office.
The store manager kept replying with the receipt-only policy, not willing to admit they were able to help but chose not to. They then abruptly hung up on my husband.
(We are now in process of putting in a formal complaint with the district manager.)
So, thank you Dear Store Manager, for the good customer service, your kindness, good manners and not to
mention, your compassion.
As for other stores I approached with the same situation, I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank everyone I dealt with at other stores for their understanding and for being so accommodating.
It just goes to show there are still some people who can exercise good judgment.
