Provincial law needed to silence noisy motorcycles
Published Tuesday October 7th, 2008

To The Editor:
First of all, please allow me to congratulate the mayor and city council of Bathurst in their attempt to address the problem with noisy motorcycles.
However, I feel that this is not the correct method to control this problem. The problem with mandatory yearly inspections on motorcycles is that it only controls the noise until the owner brings his/her motorcycle home and removes the baffles or reinstalls straight pipes.
I seem to remember reading a recent article in this newspaper in which a police spokesman stated that motorcycles do not fall under the Motor Vehicle Act, so this could be another problem getting such legislation passed.
I've been fighting this battle for more than three years and I've done a lot of research and letter writing. I feel that it would be better to have the provincial government pass a Motorcycle Noise Control Act with an allowable noise level of 85 dba. This will require the purchase of a noise level meter with will cost from $600 to $1,000.
Of course, this will be all for nothing if the Bathurst City Police don't try to enforce this new law.
Here's hoping for next summer to be more peaceful.
