Future skilled trades workers will show their stuff this Saturday in Bathurst.

The Skills Canada Competition takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bathurst High School and the event is open to the public. Sixteen students from high schools across the province will compete in automotive and carpentry skills.

"It's pretty interesting for sure," said Wally Knowles, the applied technology teacher at BHS. "This is my fourth year I've had students competing. It's pretty exciting."

Skills Canada promotes the skilled trades through high school and post-secondary competitions in each province. The winners of the provincial events move on to a national competition in Calgary, Alta. in late May.

Last year, Bathurst High students Andrew Alexander and Chris Vienneau won the provincial title and attended the national competition in Saskatoon, Sask. This year, Andrew, along with another Grade 12 student, Jake Vienneau, will represent BHS at the provincials, competing in the automotive and carpentry categories.

Mr. Knowles, who is coordinating the carpentry competition, encourages people to come see New Brunswick's future trades people.

"It's something that promotes awareness of the trades and that's our main goal," he concluded.
