Local organization receives provincial recognition

A 2008 New Brunswick Family and Community Volunteer Award was presented to Women & Family Violence Strategy Inc. last Saturday.

The award was presented to the local organization by Social Development Minister Mary Schryer during a special ceremony in Beresford. Other recipients were Lila Barry of Miramichi, Achsah Walsh of Kingston, Marilyn Craft of Saint John, “The Family and Community Volunteer Awards aims at recognizing and celebrating volunteer contributions to the well-being of families and communities all over New Brunswick,” Minister Schryer said in a news release.

The New Brunswick Family and Community Volunteer Awards has four categories: youth, adult, senior, and organization.

Winners in each of the four categories will present $1,000 to a non-profit organization of their choice provided by the Department of Social Development.

The mission of the Women and Family Violence strategy is to become involved in the safety and development of young girls and women in the Chaleur region with the intent to detect, prevent and stop violence against girls and women in their community.

For years, this organization has worked to increase the level of awareness and knowledge with regard to dating violence and existing community resources for helping young girls and women.

Some of their activities include: support group for women who are victims of violence, prevention program for teenage girls, development and maintenance of crisis intervention services, launch of the victim silhouette and organizing a conference on family violence for the public and stakeholders, with expert presenters from the United States.
