Local poker enthusiasts are invited to seven hours of card-playing fun that will add up to a good hand for a worthwhile charity.

Chaleur Palliative Community Services are holding what's being billed as their 1st Semi-Annaul Texas Hold' em Tournament on Oct. 19, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Danny's Inn and Conference Centre in Beresford.

This is the first tournament of its kind in the Chaleur region and project chairman John Ball is excited about the prospect of raising money for Chaleur Palliative Community Services.

"We expect to raise about $5,000 from this fundraiser, and if it is well received, we will be planning another tournament for next spring," he said.

Also on the committee are Greg Ireland, Bob DeGrace, Gary Tower, Dave Nason, Adam DeGrace and Josh Gammon.

Chaleur Palliative Community Services offers non-medical support to individuals and their families when coping with a terminal illness, given the fact that more and more people are making the choice to spend their final days at home. Volunteers help in varous ways, from running errands to assisting in getting people to medical appointments. The organization is a non-profit charity that receives no government funding.

The 1st Semi-Annual Texas Hold 'em Tournament will see participation limited to the first 120 players to register and pay the buy-in of $70. A $30 re-buy will also be available and the top eight finishers will share a prize pool of $3,200.

Unlike other card games, Texas Hold'em – currently the most popular card game in North America – is played as a tournament in which players are eliminated until there is only one winner. Participants all pay the same admission fee and receive the same number of chips.

For serious players, the Oct. 19 event in Beresford will crown the best Texas Hold'em player in the region. Inexperienced players will have a fun time while contributing to a much needed charity (a training session on how the game is played will be provided).

Registration forms are available at Danny's and at MAX 104.9 FM. For further information, e-mail palpoker@nbnet.nb.ca
