Beresford: Government makes good on funding commitment for sidewalks

The provincial government made good on a funding promise last week in Beresford.
On April 28, Environment Minister Roland Hache presented Beresford Mayor Raoul Charest with a cheque for $75,000.
"The fund is a commitment we had made to help the Town of Beresford with their sidewalk and the necessary work that went with that," said Mr. Hache, the Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly for Nigadoo-Chaleur."We had committed to that and today we're bringing the cheque. Last year, we had given $50,000 and this year we're giving them $75,000."
Mr. Hache said the funding comes from the Regional Development Corporation and falls under the Restigouche Chaleur Development Fund.
Mr. Charest said the funding goes towards a sidewalk project that has already been completed.
"The sidewalk money is just money that we got for work that was already done. We did that last year but we had applied to the government to get some money. They told us last year that they did not have any but at the end of the year, if they had any money left they would send us some money. So that's what the $75,000 is for."
Mr. Charest said the sidewalk project commenced in 2006 and was completed last year. He said provincial funding for the first year also came in late.
"That's the second year in a row that it goes that way. Last year it went the same way. We had applied, they told us there was no money available but at the end of the year when March came around, they send us a letter saying we found $50,000," concluded the mayor.
