Ron's Automats downed Ray's Braves of Belledune 3-1 at the Bathurst Arena Monday night to capture the Bathurst Industrial League championship and the Bryden Hains Trophy.

The Automats won the best of five final series three games to one.

Wayne Love counted twice for the champions with Kevin MacDonald adding the third goal. Bobby Landry scored the lone goal for the Braves.

The Bathurst High and J. Gordon Chalmers Home and School public school contest was held March 15 at the Bathurst High School Amphitheater.

In competition were 10 students from Grades 7,8 and 9. Winner of the annual event was Kathy Quigg who's topic was the "Parti Quebecois." Placing second was Katie Cooper who chose to speak on "The Conservation of Energy."

Residents in the Murray Avenue area have no need to fear a possible collapse of the standpipe next to the Bathurst Arena.

The tower, which used to hold water supply downtown, has been empty for the past 10 years.

"We had it investigated by a firm who does that type of work a couple years ago. The interior and exterior. There was some corrosion, but after all it was built in 1912 or 1915," said Dave Knowles, director of operations for the City of Bathurst.

The inspection showed the 115-foot standpipe posed no danger, he said.
