Re: "Fireworks fly during passing of Belledune rural plan," April 22.

After reading James Mallory's article, I feel it is appropriate to fill in a few details about the reasons for my actions.

I am qualified to comment on pollution concentratiosn. These qualifications include:

1. Teaching Chemistry 112 and Chemistry 122 for about 30 years.

2. During my bachelor of science degree at Mount Allison University, I took nine of the 10 chemistry courses offered.

3. I worked chemistry related jobs in medicine, agricultural research and an industrial environmental department.

My parents, several relatives and friends still live in Belledune. Many residents have read "Dying For Development," written by Inka Milewski, which points out 40 years of cover-up in Belledune. The consequences were well shown by the health report of the Belledune area, done for the provincial health department.

Originally, this mayor and council supported democracy and transparency at their public meetings by having a public question time. However, after being unable to answer reasonable questions about their Bennett project support, as well as questions on other projects, they eliminated the public question period and dropped the number of public meetings to two in each month.

In conclusion, when the mayor and council voted to downgrade some of the good land in Belledune, they continued their practice of support of industry and the elected officials, at the expense of their citizens. With my background in chemistry, I have a moral obligation to expose this vote.

At the meeting, I chose the only democratic means that was available.
