Farmers wish to set the record straight
Published Tuesday October 7th, 2008

To The Editor:
My husband and I are farmers, and proud of it. There is a perception among the public that certain crops are not available from local farmers at this time of year.
Well, I'm writing to set the record straight. Local corn, cucumbers, tomatoes and even some beans are still available from local producers. In northern New Brunswick, we do have a cold spring but the fall is beautiful. Modern farming practices allow farmers to save crops from the early frost, therefore providing the fresh local produce that we all love to enjoy.
Because of the late spring, our first corn crop was 20 days later maturing, therefore, with the frost late, we still have a field just maturing. Our farm is located in Black Rock and we operate a vegetable stand at our gate.
I'm also the lady with the hat at the Bathurst Farmers' Market off Munroe Street each Saturday morning.
