(Editor’s Note: Featured this week is Florence (Flo) Roussy, a local seniors activist. Mrs. Roussy is the Senior Goodwill Ambassador for Gloucester County and volunteers her time with many groups and organizations, including Family and Community Services and the Bathurst Healthy Community Network. Last year, the seniors room at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre was named in honour of Mrs. Roussy for her work on behalf of seniors. She is all of 91 years young, and an inspiration to all
of us.)

Q: Country or rock and roll?

Country. When I was brought up, it was more country music than rock and roll. All the older (classic country artists), like George Jones and Kitty Wells. At one time, I learned to do the twist and that was quite a thing then.

Q: Favourite food?

I make chowders – fish chowder, I should say. And then there's stews. I'm the one that does the cooking so I make chowders and stews more often. Pork chops now and again and, of course, chicken, too. I try to have a good meal every day.

Q: What is your pet peeve?

My pet peeve is traffic on the roads and storms. The wind we had last (month)...and the storms in the winter time because I'm all alone...Last winter, I was stuck three days because I couldn't get out. I'd get it open and then the city would come by and fill it up again. One week it happened three times.

Q: Favourite hobbies?

Cards and I love to hear music. We played for many years in a group and I played piano.

Q: Favourite movie?

I don't watch TV too much. A lot of people come into my home and say, "How come you haven't got the TV on?" I do a lot of reading and I knit at night for the kids, making socks and for the old people I make stockings for seniors at the Foyer Notre Dame de Lourdes.

Q: Favourite holiday?

I love Christmas because the kids come. I have five kids and they come here...Otherwise, I'm all alone and it wouldn't be very exciting. This year, I'm going to Moncton for Christmas.

Q: Favourite way to spend vacation?

My in-laws are all on the Gaspe coast (in Quebec) and we go down once a year for a few days down there. I like to visit there because it's beautiful in the summer time. Last year, we went all around as far as Gaspe and up the other way. I really enjoyed it.

Q: Who do you admire?

I enjoy everybody. My family comes first of course, because they're so good to me. I have a lot of friends but I don't want to name one in particular...I'm lucky that I have the good friends that I have.

Q: Best advice you've ever received?

"Always be careful" is what my children told me...and always have a good meal every day.

Q: Best thing about living in the Chaleur region?

It's all your friends, you have different places to go, it's a nice clean place and there's a lot of activities so if you want to do something, you can. I've lived here all my life and I've always enjoyed it here.
