Skate For Heart volunteer's hot chocolate
Published Tuesday December 2nd, 2008

In the kitchen this week is Megan Martell, team recruitment co-ordinator for the 2009 Heart & Stroke Skate for Heart. This fundraiser for the Heart & Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick will take place Feb. 28 at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre from 9 a.m. til 3 p.m.
Megan says this second annual winter skate event is going to be a fun time for a good cause. It involves non-competitive team skating on the ice surface or walking around the mezzanine, with participants collecting pledges beforehand.
You can enter a team of between five and 20 members at a registration cost of $10 per adult, $5 pre-school. In addition to collecting pledges, teams also have the option of organizing fundraising events and activities to help reach whatever their fundraising goal might be.
The Heart & Stroke Skate For Heart features such things as info booths on healthy living, games for everyone, a heart-healthy lunch, prizes, T-shirts and survivor testimonials.
"This will be an excellent event with lots of fun activities for businesses to team build, friend to share in some fun and families to create lasting memories," said Megan.
And, it's all going to help raise awareness about the problem of cardiovascular disease. Megan points out statistics show 40 per cent of Canadians will develop some sort of heart disease or stroke in their lifetime, and one Canadian has a stroke every 10 minutes.
To get more info on the Feb. 28 event or to register, give Megan a call at 546-3836. You can also call Phil Robichaud at 546-9604 or e-mail him at phil_robichaud@hotmail.com
In keeping with the healthy theme of Skate For Heart, Megan's sharing a yummy recipe for spiced hot chocolate that has only 162 calories and only two grams of fat.
Spiced Hot Chocolate

4 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
4 tbsp sugar
1/4 tbsp cinnamon
4 cinnamon sticks
1/2 oz of at least 50 % dark chocolate
DIRECTIONS
Warm milk over medium-low heat. Whisk in cocoa powder, sugar and cinnamon. Heat until hot but do not boil. Divide into four mugs.
Meanwhile, heat chocolate in small microwavable bowl.
Dip one end of each cinnamon stick into chocolate and place on plate lined with wax paper. Place in freezer for 10 minutes. Use cinnamon stick for stirring.
