A total of eight fighters from the Acadie Boxing Club in Bathurst will be stepping into the right this Saturday at the Herman J. Good V.C. Branch Number 18 Royal Canadian Legion on St. Peter Avenue. Shown front from left are Jonathan Plante, Wanda Mazzerole, Caitlin Furlong, Stephanie Glendenning and club owner Ken Roy. Back: Mathieu Plante, Lee Roy, Adam Gallagher and Shawn LeBlanc.

Roy will be staging an event this Saturday at the Herman J. Good V.C. Branch No. 18 Royal Canadian Legion on St. Peter Avenue.

"I think it is the first time in about five years that there has been a boxing match in Bathurst," said Roy, who operates his club out of the Legion's basement. "There have been some (fight cards) outside of Bathurst, but this will be the first time in Bathurst in a long time."

He's expecting to have boxers from throughout New Brunswick and Quebec stepping into the ring.

"I've got clubs coming from Saint John, Moncton, Grand Falls, Fredericton, Campbellton, Quebec and Beresford," he said. "I have clubs from Nova Scotia calling me to try and get on the card so I'm pretty sure I'll have at least 15 fights."

That includes at least four bouts involving female boxers, three of which are current or former Canadian champions.

"There should be good fights all night long," said Roy. "I think people are going to be surprised by the talented boxers we have in Bathurst. People have been reading a lot about my boxers, but now they'll get a chance to see them perform."

The doors open Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and the fights start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the door.

"All the money goes back to the kids," concluded Roy. "We have a competition coming up in Quebec and I want to send the kids there, and I have to buy some more equipment for the gym."
