A pond hockey tournament in Miramichi next February will feature a quartet of former National Hockey League stars.

Brad Park, Chris Nilan, Stan Jonathan and Don Marcotte will play in the corporate challenge section of the fifth annual Miramichi Rotary Pond Hockey Tournament, set for Feb. 6 to 8, 2009 at French Fort Cove.

The tournament will be broken up into six divisions and is open to players 10 years of age and over with net proceeds going towards Rotary projects.

The corporate challenge section is open to four three-player teams who will each pay $4,000, and provide team jerseys, for the right to have one of the four former NHL players added to their roster. The four teams would then face off against each other in a non-competitive group, with the celebrities signing the team jerseys as well as holding an autograph session for the public.

Brad Park was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988 after an NHL career that included seven all-star appearances while playing for the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings. Park was also chosen to play for Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.

Chris Nilan played nearly 700 games in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens, where he won a Stanley Cup in 1986; the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins. He retired from the NHL in 1992 with more than 3,000 minutes in penalties.

Drafted by the Boston Bruins in 1975, forward Stan Jonathan spent eight years in the NHL, playing for the Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Forward Don Marcotte won a pair of Stanley Cups with the Boston Bruins in the early 1970s as part of a 12-year NHL career that saw him score 230 goals in 868 games.

Last year’s Miramichi Rotary Pond hockey tournament attracted 97 teams from throughout North America and organizers hope to see that number increase to more than 100 in 2009.

The deadline to enter the tournament is Jan. 16, 2009 and registration packages in either language are available for download at www.MiramichiRotary- PondHockey.com.
